A NEW CHAPTER IS UNFOLDING –
ONE THAT HAS BEEN THIRTY YEARS IN THE MAKING.

Thunderstone is rooted in the Porongurup range of Western Australia’s Great Southern – an ancient mountain belt, over a billion years old, and the smallest of the Great Southern’s five sub-regions. This rugged outpost, just 40 kilometres north of Albany, is defined by its soaring karri forests, sweeping granite peaks, and soils carved from stone. It is a place shaped by extremes – granite, wind, altitude, and time – and it produces wines of rare clarity, precision, and elegance.

THE PORONGURUPS

Population: 342
Area: 212km
(360km South East of Perth, 45km North of Albany)

Thunderstone is anchored in one of Australia’s smallest and most distinctive grape-growing regions: the Porongurup range. With a population of just over 350 people, it’s not a region built for volume. It’s a place for those who invest in nuance, where vines grow in granite soils under the watchful presence of weather-worn rock. Tony Davis has worked with this landscape for over 30 years – his history here predates the spotlight, and his understanding of the region runs deep.

What defines Thunderstone is this contrast: wines of quiet beauty born from a wild and unforgiving place. These are not wines made to dazzle – they are made to endure.

“Find yourself in the Porongurups. You will want to stay longer, visit again and wonder how such a place is known by such a lucky few”

THE PEOPLE

The project is led by winemaker Tony Davis and wine farmer Redmond Sweeny. Together, they are bringing renewed focus to this distinctive landscape to create wines that reflect a fine balance – shaped by extremes, yet made with restraint. Grown on what they call ‘rare earth’ – granite country at the edge of mallee scrubland – these are wines of quiet confidence.

THE VINEYARD

Our vineyard exists in a corner of the world that is unlike anywhere else – a viticultural outpost marked by ancient granite boulders and slow-worn ridges. These formations are solid, unmoved, and elemental. They offer both protection and hardship. From this grounded tension comes wines of elegance and integrity – expressive, honest, and deeply rooted in the land.

“Thunderstone is for drinkers who value elegance and depth over flash and noise. Sommeliers and trade partners looking for wines that speak softly but carry weight. Chardonnay drinkers seeking something outside of Margaret River. Riesling and Pinot lovers with a taste for refined structure. Thunderstone is not for the masses – it’s for those who understand restraint.”
